Judgment of Compliance

Rationale for Judgment of Compliance

Athens State University designates the responsibility for program coordination and curriculum development and review to persons that are academically qualified within the various program disciplines. The College of Business, The College of Education, and The College of Arts and Sciences are administratively organized with a Dean and department chairs to manage the degree programs. Although each college’s structure of department chairs slightly differs from one another, the process of curriculum review involves consultation with the college’s faculty members and the dean of the respective college. Department chairs, in consultation with their Dean and faculty, submit curriculum amendments to the University Curriculum Committee for final approval.

College of Education
The College of Education includes four department chairs: Chair of Curriculum and Instruction, which is the overarching department involving the degree programs of Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Special/Collaborative Education and Secondary Education Licensure; Chair of Physical Education; Chair of Technical Education and Chair of Philosophical Foundations and Technology. Also, note that students preparing for teaching careers in secondary education pursue a major teaching specialization through the College of Arts and Sciences. Thus, the College of Arts & Sciences includes a department chair for each of the specialized areas. The College of Education has identified the responsibility of department chair to persons that are academically qualified and have terminal degrees in their field.

College of Arts & Sciences
The College of Arts & Sciences includes five department chairs that oversee their respective disciplines. The department chairs include: Chair of Behavioral Science, Chair of Health and Professional Studies, Chair of Humanities and Social Science, Chair of Mathematics and Computer Science, and Chair of Natural Science. Three of the Department Chairs in the College of Arts Sciences have terminal degrees in their areas of study.

College of Business
The College of Business has a Department Chair for each program area of the following majors: Chair of Accounting, Chair of Management, Chair of Human Resource Management, Chair of Logistics and Acquisition, and Chair of Enterprise Systems and Technology. The Department Chairs oversee their designated areas of discipline to ensure that faculty members receive assistance with making recommendations for curriculum changes in consultation with the Dean.
